Karlsruhe, in cooperation with the Hochschule für Musik, has announced a competition for composition students on the occasion of Friedrich Hölderlin's 250th birthday. The topic was the setting to music of a poem or a poem excerpt by Friedrich Hölderlin (image excerpt from the manuscript of "Der Wanderer"). The results of the competition will be heard in this concert for the first time.

Beginning with Ludwig van Beethoven's Choral Fantasy op. 80, the concert explores a less well-known side of the composer. The title is taken from the Piano Sonatas op. 27, whose no. 2 is the famous "Moonlight Sonata". The Fantasy op. 77 also shows Beethoven's passion for improvisational influences and free forms. It also sounds an attempt to translate Beethoven's fantasy into the present day: An approach to dealing with Beethoven's fantasy in conversation with the performers.
