Music Journalism for Radio, Television, and Internet master’s degree program

The Music Journalism for Broadcasting and Multimedia master’s degree program requires previous experience in journalism and specialized knowledge of music. Students are trained to become qualified online / radio / television music journalists, mastering programming and production tasks in all areas of music. Studies begin in the winter semester.

The program features experimental study, exploring traditional forms of journalistic presentation and communication as well as prominent new possibilities. The degree program prepares students with versatile, highly specialized training in multimedia journalism professional requirements. Practical training is the key. Students create videos and television broadcasts and produce and host radio programs. Most of these are broadcasted live from the university studio to Karlsruhe area listeners on 104.8 MHz FM.

Collaborations and projects with regional and national television and radio stations and other international institutions are an important feature of the program. Supplementary internships and study trips involve students directly in professional media work as formative experiences.

The master's program comprises four semesters, developing unique journalistic profiles by focusing on Music / Culture in Traditional and Online Media and Trimedial Production (see MA studies - study plan). Interdisciplinary study and teaching result in journalistic competence in special broadcasting formats, as required in present and future cultural programs. Extensive tri-media production or a multimedia project serve as master’s degree thesis. Graduates of the master's degree program earn the Master of Arts (M.A.) - Music Journalism for Broadcasting and Multimedia.

Admission requires qualifying professional experience in the music and media sector, as well as aptitude testing of general knowledge and linguistic / journalistic abilities.

Graduates of the Institute for Music Journalism are in demand as versatile and competent employees in online / music / cultural editorial departments of broadcasters and media companies. They also work in press agencies, concert offices, or festival and orchestral managements.
