BIOGRAFIE

Wolfgang Holzmair was born in Vöcklabruck (Austria) and studied at the Vienna Academy of Music with Hilde Rössel-Majdan (voice) and Erik Werba (lied). As a lied singer he regularly performs in the world's leading music centers, such as London, Lisbon, Moscow, New York, Seoul, Washington, at the Risör Festival (Norway), at the festivals of Bath, Belfast and Edinburgh, at the Menuhin Festival Gstaad, the Bregenz Festival as well as at the Carinthian Summer – together with leading pianists of our time. His operatic roles include Masino in Haydn's "La vera costanza", Papageno and Sprecher ("The Magic Flute"), Don Alfonso ("Così fan tutte"), Eisenstein ("Die Fledermaus"), Wolfram ("Tannhäuser"), Faninal ("Der Rosenkavalier"), Musiklehrer ("Ariadne auf Naxos"), Vater ("Hansel and Gretel"), Danilo ("Die lustige Witwe"), Eduard (Hindemith: "Neues vom Tage") and Demetrius (Britten: "A Midsummernight's Dream").
Wolfgang Holzmair has worked with leading European and American orchestras such as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Concertgebouw Orchestra under conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Pierre Boulez, Riccardo Chailly, Ivan Fischer, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir Roger Norrington and Seiji Ozawa.
His numerous recordings include operas, concertos and songs by composers ranging from Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and Wolf to contemporary composers. For years, the artist has also been committed to the dissemination of works – especially songs – by formerly persecuted composers, as evidenced by his Křenek, Mittler, Zeisl, Schreker and Theresienstadt CDs. Wolfgang Holzmair's recording of Brahms' "Ein deutsches Requiem" under Herbert Blomstedt was awarded a Grammy.
Since 1998 he has led a lied and oratorio class at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and gives master classes in Europe and North America. He is also Visiting Professor at the Royal College in London.
